So sad to that my long weekend is over but at least it’s a short work week!  On Friday we went out to a steakhouse by our old apartment that we had yet to try and were sad we waited so long to go!  Pretty sure Jeremy is still having dreams about his filet and béarnaise sauce.  The rest of the weekend was spent inside as we had a tiny snow ‘storm’ if you can even call it that and then temps dropped like crazy so we spent many many hours on the couch.  I’m pretty sure the impression of my body is still there.  Now, after a long weekend of indulging, two of our favorites are on the menu for this week!

1. Steak Fajitas

First up is steak fajitas which I think may be Jeremys favorite meal that I cook.  My mom actually gifted us a small cast iron fajita pan with wooden trivet and it’s the MVP of this meal.

Ingredients:

skirt steak

3 peppers (I usually use a mix of red and orange)

1 white onion

fajita seasoning (I throw a ton of spices together and never measure it out but here is a recipe that includes all the spices I always use)

Corn or flour tortillas

Optional toppings: avocado, sour cream, salsa

Directions:

Slice steak in 1/4 inch pieces

Slice all peppers & the white onion

Heat 1 tbsp oil in cast iron pan over medium heat

Coat each piece of sliced skirt steak in fajita seasoning and add to the pan

Cook about 6-7 minutes until all steak is fully cooked

Add in pepper and onion and stir until they are tender

Serve mixture in warm tortillas and add any toppings of your choice!

Pretty much the easiest dinner and always delicious.  We actually make these into ‘fajita bowls’ and skip the tortillas but serve it over brown rice- more like a fajita-less fajita.

2.  Lemon & Dill Chicken

Another really simple recipe!  I’ve tried this with dried dill weed and I must say the the fresh dill really makes a difference!  I’ll typically make this with a side of cous cous and a vegetable- usually some roasted brussel sprouts or broccoli.

Another soup might be in order for next week if the temperatures stay this low! Let me know if you have any favorite soup recipes!

small master bathroom Our very first home renovation is complete!  While our house was ‘move-in ready’ it was, and in some parts still is, a bit outdated.  With our two biggest projects being the kitchen and this bathroom we…ok maybe I (happy wife happy life, right?) decided  to start small with our tiny master bath.  This bathroom along with the others in our home are quite small but that was not at all a deal breaker for us.  It did make this project SLIGHTLY easier as the layout didn’t change.  Our house was built in the 1970’s and this bathroom was NOT trying to hide it’s age.  I actually refused to use this bathroom prior to the start of the renovation because while I could sort of get over the yellow walls, and even the yellow sink, the yellow toilet just put me over the edge.  Thank goodness for a slightly better hallway bathroom.  Okay, enough potty talk here’s two before pictures to really set the scene.

And thanks to our gem of a contractor it now looks like THIS:

pottery barn medicine cabinet I was so against a medicine cabinet because in my mind they all look cheesy and unfinished (frameless) but this one totally made me a believer.  This was the exact style I wanted for a mirror and it’s a huge bonus that it’s a medicine cabinet because hidden storage is key in this small space.

navy blue vanity So happy with our navy blue vanity!  We loved the gold hardware but didn’t want to do ALL gold hardware throughout the bathroom because I thought it might be a LITTLE too trendy for me so we decided to mix metals.  The vanity drawer pulls and the scones are both a gold/bronze finish while the rest of the hardware is polished nickel.  I was super nervous about this but I did some research and found that this could totally work as long as we repeat each finish at least twice and stick to 2-3 finishes max.  I LOVE how it come out!

shower floor tileshower wall tile Jeremy was insistent on a rain shower head so that is what we got.  I think he was a tad underwhelmed with the water pressure but to me it works just fine and I love that you can tilt it any which way you please.

The background of our nook is the same tile as the shower floor.  AND yes, we use more than one product but I just hadn’t moved them all over just yet.

I’m thinking of doing a post on what we learned from our first renovation project- what worked and what we would do differently if we could go back in time.  Let me know if that would be something you’re interested in!

I’m so excited to share a new series here on the blog!  I am always looking for new recipes and meal ideas so I thought I’d share what I find & cook along the way.  While Jeremy is certainly the better chef we both share the cooking responsibilities in this house.  Honestly, figuring out what we are having for dinner each night provokes more arguments between Jeremy and I than I’d like to admit.  It sounds ridiculous but we are SO different when it comes to food.  I would be perfectly happy throwing together a salad every night while Jeremy needs a protein, carb and veggie and it can’t be the same carb he had for lunch…or the night before, and he can’t have the same animal protein two nights in a row, and the veggie can’t be oven baked asparagus because asparagus is only good on the grill.  Okay, I’ll admit I’m at fault too being that I don’t each fish (and he LOVES fish) and I’ll only agree to eat brown rice and whole wheat pasta…I like to keep my carbs complex.  Needless to say we’ve both learned to compromise a bit and I have learned that I need to keep a running list of meal ideas on my phone so that I can spit them out when I get the daily “what do you want to have for dinner?” text.

Each week I’ll be sharing 2-3 recipes that I’ll cook on Sunday to have for dinner and lunch during the week- often not my own because I’m not super creative in the kitchen.  This week I have one tried and true ‘recipe’ and a second that I just made for the very first time.  I included some very pathetic photos today but I may or may not share them each week (let me know what you prefer) because my food photography is laughable and I’m pretty sure that if anything it might deter you from making these meals.

1. Pesto pasta with grilled chicken and cherry tomatoes

A crowd pleaser in the Stauber house.  I used whole wheat penne and and Trader Joe’s vegan kale, cashew & basil pesto for my portion and a regular pesto from Costco for Jeremy.  This one is super simple:

Cook pasta and drain.

Heat pesto in a saucepan

Mix pesto in with pasta

Add in grilled chicken (I cooked mine in the oven for 25 minutes at 350•)

top with cherry tomatoes

optional topping: shaved parmesan

(exhibit A of pathetic food photography)

 2.  Salsa Verde Steak Soup

This is from a favorite website/blog of mine, Gimme Some Oven.  I just made her Cajun Corn Chowder last week and it came out great.  I really love that she gives cooking instructions for stovetop, instant pot and crock pot! I often find recipes I’d love to try but they’re specifically for  an instant pot which we do not have and I’m not ready to add yet another small appliance to our collection.  Anyways, I made this in a dutch oven and it was SO simple.  This definitely has all the tangy/zesty flavors of salsa verde, the only thing I left out was a poblano pepper because I couldn’t find one.  I’ll be bringing this to work tomorrow for lunch!

It’s been a very long time since my last post.  Last year was filled with all things wedding (which I’ll eventually share more on!) and it consumed my life.  Being that I’ve neglected this little slice of the world wide web for so long I decided I’ll sum up my favorite purchases of 2018 being that I hadn’t shared much of them throughout the year. HERE WE GO…

  • OUR HOME!

Definitely my favorite and biggest purchase of the year/my life.  Jeremy really wanted to start house hunting before the wedding but I was adamant that it had to wait because I would be WAY too overwhelmed.  Although we started looking just days after returning from our honeymoon I am so glad we didn’t start the hunt before the wedding as the home buying process was WAY more emotionally exhausting than I had imagined.  We moved in the first week in September and have been slowly making this house a home.  I’ll be sharing our first renovation project very soon!

After our mighty little magic bullet died we did some research and upgraded to this blender.  It is great for making sauces, hummus, smoothies and probably 100 other things I have yet to try.  I’ve mostly used it for smoothies and it works great! My only complaint is that it is loud but that is not at all a deal breaker for me.  It also comes with a large tumbler BUT you do need to purchase a separate blade to screw on the tumbler if you want to use that directly on the blender base.

So this technically wasn’t a ‘purchase’ but it was a gift that we registered for.  My sweet sweet girlfriends bought this for my bridal shower gift and Jeremy and I were SOOO excited when it came.  This vacuum is a GAME CHANGER.  It is incredibly lightweight and cordless which makes vacuuming super quick and seamless.  I can vacuum the entire house in less than 20 minutes.  It comes with several attachments, it’s easy to empty and you can quickly take off the top portion to use as a hand vacuum.  I now feel VERY strongly about cordless vacuums as it’s brought me more joy than ever imaginable.

I used to insist that I would never like an e-reader because I enjoy holding an actual book but I decided to give the Kindle a try because everyone/thing deserves a first chance, right?  Well, turns out I love it and I totally get why others do to.  The lighting works perfectly and it’s great for reading in bed.  I have admittedly been awful about reading lately but I’m hoping to join the local library so I can download books on my Kindle through them (I think that’s a thing?).

Our first big furniture purchase for our new home!  We outgrew our old sofa quite awhile ago but agreed we would wait to purchase something new until we bought a house.  This sofa came highly recommended from my friend Janna and she would never steer me wrong!  I brought Jeremy to check it out in store and he was immediately sold.  It’s everything I wanted in a couch- very comfortable, looks polished yet cozy, a great neutral color (ours is the taft cement fabric) and the cushion depth is ahhhhmazing. crate & Barrel lounge ii Max is also a big fan of the new couch!

Pretty much my entire skincare regimen consists of Beautycounter products but this product easily takes the cake.  I will for sure be repurchasing this again and again and again.  I’ve never used a product that actually provides a noticeable change OVERNIGHT until I gave this peel a try.  I use it about 2 to 3 times a week on nights when I don’t apply facial oil. I have very dry and dull skin but it is noticeably brighter the morning after using this peel and WAY smoother.  Best part is you just apply all over your skin before bed and just rinse or wash your face in the morning.  I’m pretty lazy when it comes to using masks or peels so this product is perfect and perfectly low maintenance.  The other bonus is this happens to be very reasonably priced in comparison to some of their other products. & now on to my favorite clothing purchases

I’ve been working on narrowing down my jean inventory and purchasing pairs that I feel great in rather than a mediocre pair that I found at a great price.  I’ve raved about Madewell denim in the past and they really are the very best.  This pair is my most recent denim purchase.  I was really needing a darker wash that I could wear to work and on the weekend.  I’ve been wearing these non-stop and they are currently my most reached for denim.  Also, for anyone that doesn’t know, you can donate a pair of old jeans (any brand) to Madewell and they will give you a $20 coupon to use on a new pair!

I am always searching for the perfect basic tee and I’ve discovered a new favorite.  These t-shirts are super affordable, a great fit and they wash really well.  I have both the black and white and wear them on the weekends and under cardigans for work.  They are a perfect fit- tailored yet not clingy.  I wear a size Medium in these.

I REALLY do not know how I survived winters in New York and Connecticut before this purchase.  I bought this jacket last Winter and it’s made the cold weather SO much more bearable without sacrificing style!  This is my go-to jacket for the entire season and I love that it’s also machine washable unlike any wool coats I’ve had.  Jeremy actually called me out for trying it on in the olive color the other day (I own the black).  When it’s good, it’s good. Fun fact- the filling is made from recycled plastic bottles, so cool!  I wear a size Small in this jacket- it runs a little big but I use the drawstring to bring it in at the waist. J.Crew Perfect Winter Parka

I won’t go on and on about these because I have talked about them so many times in the past but these really are my favorite leggings and actually the only black leggings I own (aside from 2 pairs strictly for workout out). zella live in leggings

Aside from the leggings I had yet to try any other products by Zella until I tried these joggers.  They are my current favorite lounge pants and although I rarely ever leave the house in sweatpants if I do I’m wearing these.  They work great for an athleisure look because they have a more tailored slim fit and pair perfectly with a black tee, jean jacket and some white tennis shoes.  If in between sizes I recommend sizing up in these- I wear a Medium.

& that’s a wrap.

There’s a bunch of great sales going on this weekend so naturally I made my way into a couple of stores today. I’ve rounded up a few things that I tried on today and some others that are sitting pretty (probably not for long) in my online shopping carts.

If you’re in the market for a new jacket this one is 50% off and so classic. I’m in need of a good Winter coat so I’m currently contemplating purchasing this one (sizing: I tried it on today and it runs big).

I purchased this cardigan a few weeks ago and now it’s only $24.  I may need to order another color.  Anybody else cardi crazy?

I feel like a champ right now, survived a post-vacation Monday at the office and I’m writing a blog post.  Thats’s huuuuuge.  I had such a relaxing week in Cape Cod with my family.  It was our first family vacation since 2009!  Ice-cream, beach and wine (lots of wine) made for the perfect week.  Now I’m just counting down the days until my next vacation and a trip down south for my besties wedding next month!  Waiting all Summer for these vacations to begin was quite tough but I am so grateful to have spent this past week with my family and so excited to spend my next trip with Jeremy and some of my very best friends.

I just picked a few pieces for next months trip including these tie waist shorts.  I love the tie detail and the loose fit on the legs.  I always find that a looser fitting short is the most flattering and obviously way more comfortable than anything form fitting.  Looking back, I probably should have paired these with a bodysuit because my shirt was just not cooperating/staying tucked in #RUDE.   My shorts are on sale but selling out quick so also linked some similar pairs in the widget above.

So many retail stores are coming out with their new arrivals for Fall which means two things- 1. Fall is coming and 2. Summer clothes are ON SALE.  I’ve found a few great deals and some of these pieces can even be transitioned into your wardrobe for the cooler temps.

I have and love these sandals which are now almost half the original price.  I also really love this lace-up pair.

I recently purchased this kimono and the colors are SO pretty.  I plan on wearing this with white jeans and a simple white tank underneath.  It’s marked way down right now.

This one shoulder top is such a fun piece and I also love the striped version.

These leggings are great for working out. All my favorite leggings are from this brand and I always grab a new pair when I see them on sale.

This lightweight knit is a great transition piece and the fringe is a fun little detail.

I’m always up a for a new cardigan and this cable knit one would be great for Fall, I love the blue!

This white dress is even better in person, I don’t think the online image really does it justice.

I’ve been on the search for a jumpsuit and this striped one immediately caught my eye.

So many deals, so little (Summer) time.

There are just a few more days left to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  Prices go back up on August 7th so I wanted to share what I purchased AND KEPT from the sale. Keep in mind that although a lot of items may be sold out I know Nordstrom is randomly re-stocking them so be sure to keep checking back if there is something you want (and then check out right away!).

I’ll sum up all my purchases by categories so that this doesn’t seem like a completely unorganized rambling of a post.  Or maybe it will be either way? Okay, here we go…

Jackets

  1. Blank NYC Suede Moto Jacket : This is my favorite purchase from the sale.  This was also a huge hit last year but this years version is MUCH better.  Last years version had a belt that hung quite awkwardly in my opinion.  This version was a much better fit on me and the gray was a no-brainer.  This is an item that is in and out of stock- if you see it in stock I say grab it!! (Remember that Nordstrom offers free shipping and free returns.) Wearing a size small.blanknyc-suede-moto
  2. Madewell Catskills Jacket : I love the unexpected bluish gray color for a military jacket as most are usually some shade of green.   The sleeves definitely run short on me so I contemplated returning it but the color is keeping me hooked and I’ll likely be wearing it with the sleeves rolled (as I do with my current military jacket).  This is a similar option in the olive color. If you don’t already have a military jacket I’d bet you’d be surprised at how much wear you’ll get out of one, they really go with everything casual! Wearing a size small. madewell-jacket IMG_5168

Shoes

  1. Kristin Cavallari Capri Mule: I’ve had my eyes on these for quite some time.  I love the light shade of greige (ya know, gray-beige).  They are the perfect neutral shoe for Fall and I can’t wait to break them out in a few months! Fit TTS. kristin-cavallari-capri-mule gray-mules
  2. Treasure & Bond Easton Chelsea Bootie : I was quite disappointed with a very large majority of the boots and booties on sale.  It seemed like SO many were round or almond toe and I’ve been gravitating towards the exact opposite.  Once I saw these pointy toe booties they were immediately added to my cart.  Unfortunately they are a bit delayed on shipping even though I ordered them back on 7/13! Luckily I won’t need them for another few months but nonetheless I am a bit antsy to see how they look and fit in person.  I’m convinced that these will be keepers! Ordered my regular size in the black leather.

Tops/Sweaters

  1. Love by Design Cuff Sleeve Pullover : So this wasn’t in my very first order but I am SO glad I grabbed it a few days into the sale.  I am a complete sucker for sweaters that are 100% cotton because the slightest bit of wool will drive me nuts.  This sweater is soft and MACHINE WASHABLE.  I really really really appreciate machine washable sweaters.  This is the perfect oversized sweater for Fall. Definitely size down, I went with a small but could have easily fit an XS.cuff-sleeve-sweater love-by-design-sweater
  2. Treasure & Bond Stitch Play Cardigan : If you’ve been following for awhile then you are well aware that cardigans are my JAM.  This is also 100% cotton!!  The charcoal color is different than any cardigans that I currently own so obviously this needed to make its way into my closet.  A comfy cozy win!treasure-bond-cardigan
  3. Lush Raw Edge Side Slit Tee : You can never have too many basic t-shirts!  I’ve needed a black tee so this fit the bill.  I bought a Medium because I’m sure it’ll shrink a tad and I like my t-shirts to have a loose fit.lush-raw-edge-teelush-tee
  4. Caslon Rounded V-Neck Tee : I actually bought this tee during a past Nordstrom Sale and I still wear it all the time.  I spotted this grey shade in store and couldn’t resist.  The color is a lot prettier in person! Also wearing a medium in this one. caslon-tee

Accessories

  1. Kate Spade New York Bright Idea Stud Earrings : I was in desperate need of a new pair of everyday studs.  My ears were turning green from my current pair…GREEN!  These were definitely a bit bigger than I expected but I’ve still been wearing them daily and love them.  I purchased the clear/silver pair.  If you are looking for something smaller these may fit the bill.
  2. BaubleBar Mini Piñata Statement Earrings: These are unfortunately (currently) sold out but another color option can be found here.  These are the perfect statement earrings and they will definitely be my go-to for some upcoming weddings and events! baublebar-pinata-earrings

Jeans/Bottoms

  1. DL1961 Intasculpt: I tried several pairs of jeans from the sale but these are the winners! Most flattering pair and the perfect length.  These will work well with both flats and booties and I love the darker wash.  They are currently out of stock but this is the same style in a different color (unfortunately this wash is not on sale). These do have some stretch.  I’m wearing a size 26. dl1961-instasculpt
  2. Zella Live-In Leggings: I’ve talked about these too many times to count.  I currently own the regular rise pair and love these even more.  The high rise is SO comfortable and really sucks you in. Super flattering! Hands down my favorite leggings. Wearing size small. zella-live-in-leggings

ANDDDDD my wallet is now screaming bloody murder so that’s all.  It was a lot of trial and error (thank goodness for Nordstrom making returns SUPER easy) but I am SO happy to have a few new pieces for Summer and a few great staples to wear this Fall.

I can actually say good morning and mean it!  Usually I’m not much of a morning person BUT early access for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts today SO I’m shopping and shopping = happy Jessica.  I currently have my online shopping cart filled up and I plan to head to Nordstrom on my “lunch” (/ shopping) break today.  Maybe I should warn my boss that someone may need to come drag me out of the fitting room if I’m not back at work within an hour.  Anyways, so many items tend to sell out SUPER quick during the sale so I wanted to share my purchases with you ASAP as in right now.  I’ll have a few more posts up during the sale (public access for non-cardholders starts 7/21!). All items in the collage below are shoppable- all you have to do is click directly on the item!

I’m also in desperate need of a warmer coat for the winter and have my eye on this one.
I included a few pairs of Zella leggings in the collage but I also own these and they are by far my favorite leggings (if you’ve been reading my blog for awhile then you’re already well aware of that).  They always sell our pretty quick so I grab mine right away.
If you’re in the market for a leather jacket (closet staple!) then check out this one.  The quality looks amazing and I love the texture! I’m also loving this lightweight jacket and the cut of this blazer.
I’ve raved about Madewell jeans a lot and they really are SO flattering.  This pair is part of the sale.
Kind of random but I came across this picnic set and I think it would make a really cute engagement or bridal shower gift!
Two items I spotted in the home decor section are this cable knit throw and this throw pillow.
I’m not typically one to buy body con dresses but I found two that are really tempting me: here and here.  I think the necklines would be super flattering and buying them in black is a given!
Okay now I really need to get my butt to work but happy shopping!  I’ll be sure to snap some pictures of anything I try on in store today.

Skirt: Gap // Top: Old Navy // Bag: Sole Society (via Nordstrom) // Shoes: Lord & Taylor

I’m not sure what it is but I have taken a liking to sleeveless sweaters.  Maybe its because I LOVE sweaters and owning sleeveless ones means I can wear sweaters year long! When I saw this one with the stripes I was obviously sold.  Stripes give me life!  I’m loving the high neckline #workappropriate and the ribbed texture.  I also have my (heart) eyes on this one.

Other sleeveless sweaters I’m loving:

I also have to mention these shoes because I have been sliding into them so much since I bought them.  The heel height is perfect making them SO easy to walk in and super comfortable for all day wear.  I have the camel color sitting in my cart because no matter what Jeremy says I could always use another pair of neutral shoes.

I’m feeling like the week has flown by (for a change!) and I am oh SO excited for the weekend.  Tomorrow night I’m heading to the mall for some shopping with a friend and on Saturday I am going to a winery with a bunch of pals.  Hopefully this weekend doesn’t fly by as quick as the week did- that just wouldn’t be fair!

My days of wearing anything colorful are few and far between.  I am a sucker for neutrals and you can’t go wrong with beige on white on white on taupe.  I mentioned these shoes on Instagram and they really are my new favorites!  I actually wanted these all last Summer but was patiently (for a change) waiting for them to go on sale.  When I saw them back in stock this Spring I knew I had to grab them.  They never got marked down but luckily they were part of the Shopbop sale so I did get a wee little discount.  I am loving the tassel detail and how they have the look of a lace-up shoe without the hassle!   Tassel and no hassle…CHECK.  I’ve found that I rarely ware any lace up shoes I have purchased because getting them tied perfectly is way too time consuming.  I am already ALWAYS running late so a five minute putting-on-the-shoe routine just doesn’t work. This pair has an easy little zipper on the back…thank you, Jeffrey Campbell!

Okay now on to the update!  It only took me 6+ months to find a venue and get things going.  I am admittedly very venue-picky and insisted on getting married someplace other than in a ballroom.  Wellllllll, guess what? We are getting married in a ballroom and I couldn’t be more excited about it!  So, what gives? Our ballroom is different. No really, the light fixtures are so elegant and like none I’ve seen before, the floors are a gorgeous wood finish, the windows and drapery are on point and there isn’t a tacky looking rug.  It has a Great Gatsby vibe and I was SO pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed with excitement when we found this gem.  So aside from the venue and food our next priority was the band.  We headed to Boston and checked out our potential wedding band which is now officially our wedding band.  This was basically a no-brainer after hearing them play.  My favorite part about weddings is all the dancing so music is KEY.  Our next task is finding our photographer.  We will hopefully be meeting with one in the next couple weeks and will soon have that crossed off our list.  Not so bad for a year out.  I am hoping that we if we can cross some of the important things off our to-do list now we won’t be too overwhelmed in a few months.  Oh, and lastly I went dress shopping!!  My mom and sister (/MOH) came to Connecticut on my birthday to take me dress shopping.  We visited 3 different stores and I found TWO dresses which I loved.  Two VERY different dresses, both which I never imagined I’d love so much- kind of like my ballroom of a wedding venue.  One is unique and unexpected while the other is classic and timeless.  I haven’t purchased either one yet as I am the most indecisive person ever but I am definitely leaning towards one. Well, thats a wrap…I’ll leave you guessing which dress I choose (if I ever decide).

Thanks for stopping by!
